Title

Rutherford County US/NC Route Change Proposals

body

Summary:

summary

A meeting was held recently with NCDOT representatives regarding their plans to renumber some of Rutherford County’s primary road routes to help reduce confusion and sign clustering due to the current configuration of various Hwy. 221s and Hwy 74s. The primary renumbering that will impact the highest number of property owners is the renumbering of Hwy. 74B, which runs through Spindale, Forest City and Ellenboro into Mooresboro, to Hwy. 108. Hwy 74B would be eliminated. Many of the businesses and residences on this route will retain their address if it is a street name such as West Main Street, East Main Street, etc. However, for any resident or business that has a US HWY 74B address, this will change to a US HWY 108 address. With the new rerouting of Hwy. 221 and the confusion caused by the cluster of signs used to attempt to direct people driving on Rutherford County roadways, NCDOT believes this renumbering will help to reduce confusion and to better align Hwy. 221, 221A, 74, 74A, etc. Also, some of the Hwy. 74s and 221s exist on some of roadways at the same time, which can be confusing.

A resolution of acknowledge/endorsement is presented for the Board of Commissioners to consider.
